Improved spaces for family contact, more child-friendly surroundings, and larger areas for staff to collaborate are among the benefits of a new Department for Child Protection office in Whyalla.

Minister for Child Protection Katrine Hildyard on Monday officially opened the new office, before meeting local foster and kinship carers and young people at roundtable meetings, to discuss issues affecting them.

The new office space is at a premises which houses a range of other government-run services. It includes a large training room and also features large murals and other improvements to make more child-friendly spaces.

The refurbished building, formerly used by Services Australia, is also more spacious than the nearby former Whyalla office, allowing for stronger staff collaboration.

The new office is just a short walk from the former premises, across the carpark, and can be contacted on 1800 245 242.

Minister Hildyard said: "I’m really happy to open the Department’s new office here in Whyalla."

"This new space will help the deeply committed, compassionate people working in child protection and family support to efficiently and effectively carry out the work they do each day to keep children safe and nurtured and families well supported," she said.

"This larger office will allow for staff growth and provide a calming, friendly environment for families to come to when they interact with local child protection services.

"I’m also very much looking forward to meeting with foster and kinship carers here in Whyalla. I thank them for opening their hearts, homes and lives to children and young people; they make such a difference in their lives, helping ensure they feel loved, safe and nurtured.

"Hearing from them about how we can support them in their crucial roles will be central to today’s carer roundtable discussions."
