Children in care

Sometimes children or young people are unable to live at home with their birth families.

Out-of-home care is for children and young people who are unable to live with their parents and includes foster care and kinship care.

Foster carers and kinship carers provide a temporary caring home for a child or young person while their parents or caregivers and family members receive support to help them work out difficulties.
