DCP Residential Care is currently embedding the Sanctuary Model, a therapeutic, trauma-informed framework. This process began in 2021, and the Residential Care directorate is now working towards full certification in the model.
The Sanctuary Model is a comprehensive approach that supports both clinical and organisational change. Its main goal is to build safe, trauma-informed communities, like residential care settings, that focus on healing and recovery from adversity.
The model was originally developed in the USA in the early 1980s. It combines trauma theory and systems theory to respond not just to the effects of trauma on individuals, but also on whole organisations. In Australia, the Sanctuary Model has been adapted for our local context by MacKillop Family Services, who are the licensed providers here.
The Four Pillars of the Sanctuary Model:
- Shared Knowledge
Building resilience by helping people understand trauma and how to respond to it. - Shared Values
Guided by the Sanctuary Commitments—core principles that help create environments focused on safety, healing, and positive change. - Shared Language
Using the S.E.L.F. Framework (Safety, Emotions, Loss, and Future) to guide problem-solving and support the wellbeing of children, young people, staff, and teams. - Shared Practice
A practical toolkit that helps individuals and teams deal with tough situations, strengthen relationships, and build resilience.
The Sanctuary Commitments
These are the shared values that guide the way we work and support one another. DCP Residential Care has added an Eighth Commitment ‘Culture’ - to reflect our strong focus on cultural safety and responsiveness.
- Non-violence – We provide unconditional care, keeping ourselves and others safe.
- Emotional Intelligence – We manage our emotions so we don’t hurt ourselves or others.
- Social Learning – We stay curious and learn from each other.
- Democracy – Everyone’s voice matters; we listen and respect different views.
- Open Communication – We’re honest and kind in how we speak and share information.
- Social Responsibility – We support each other and own our actions.
- Growth and Change – We recognise loss, stay open to new ideas, and look ahead with hope.
- Culture – We engage in ongoing reflection to address power imbalances and ensure cultural safety for everyone.
By building a culture of understanding, safety, and support, the Sanctuary Model helps reduce the long-term effects of trauma, promotes healing, and strengthens the wellbeing of both the people we support and those working in DCP Residential Care.
