The decision about whether a pet would be appropriate in a residential care facility is a decision for each individual provider taking into account the potential benefits and challenges that owning a pet may bring.

We understand that some providers have been asking about the rules around pets for children in residential care.

If you are considering purchasing a pet, we require that they are appropriately registered, fully vaccinated and able to be restrained to ensure the safety of children, young people and staff at all times.  This is in addition to your general obligations as a pet owner.

If you have any specific questions about licensing requirements and pets, please talk to your contract manager. Acknowledging that a pet may not be suitable for everyone, we also recommend that you discuss the child or young person’s individual needs with their case manager both before making a decision and during the planning process.
