The Department for Child Protection (DCP) recently hosted an orientation day for the providers of a new pilot Aboriginal Kinship Carer Support Program, which will be commencing in coming months.

DCP welcomed attendees from Aboriginal Family Support Services, InComPro (and their partner organisation UnitingCare Wesley Bowden) and KWY (and their partner organisation Lutheran Community Care SA/NT).

Department leaders presented information on a range of topics including referral pathways, carer assessment, disability services, the role of Principal Aboriginal Consultants, implementation of the Aboriginal Child Placement Principle and the 5 elements, the practice approach and service contracts.

The pilot program is a critical step in ensuring that we engage with our kinship carers of Aboriginal children effectively in a culturally safe manner.
