A new Aboriginal-specific residential care service will open this week to provide safe and culturally appropriate care for 4 young people.

As announced on 15 May 2019, a new Aboriginal-specific residential care service will open this week to provide safe and culturally appropriate care for 4 young people.

The new service will provide Aboriginal young people with a therapeutic residential care setting, involving a range of activities and approaches that promote their cultural identity.

As an Aboriginal community controlled service provider, InComPro will provide therapeutic care in a culturally responsive environment. InComPro is now 1 of 2 Aboriginal community-controlled organisations that specialise in providing residential care for Aboriginal young people.

The new service is based in the northern suburbs and will commence in late May.  4 young people will be housed in 2 houses. The specialised model of care was developed with culture at the forefront of a therapeutic approach.  InComPro Chief Executive Officer Steve Newchurch said the new model was a significant step for Aboriginal young people in care.

“As an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation, we understand the importance of helping our young people to develop their culture and identity safely and having their life history recorded as they grow up,” said Mr Newchurch.

“Our goal is to help these young people develop the relational skills and behaviours they need to transition to less intensive care options, while maintaining strong connections with Aboriginal culture, kin and community.”

Currently we are supporting the young people to prepare and transition successfully to the new service through a range of social activities.
