Phase one of the Children and Young People (Safety) Act 2017 is now switched on.

Phase one of the Children and Young People (Safety) Act 2017 is now switched on. It supports the reform program already underway through A Fresh Start, the state government’s response to the Nyland Royal Commission into Child Protection in South Australia.

The Act introduces a child-focused legislative framework with a greater emphasis on carer involvement in decision-making, re-orientation of our investment toward early and earlier intervention to help families avoid contact with the Department for Child Protection or entry into care.

The Department for Child Protection is well progressed towards implementing key reforms highlighted in A Fresh Start and the new act provides a key lever for cultural change and practice throughout the department, and in the way we work with other agencies and our partners across the wider sector.

The new legislative framework includes significant changes aimed at improving outcomes for children and young people and providing the best opportunities for children and young people to thrive and reach their potential
