Respite a great step into foster care for Philippa and Rod

There are so many ways you can be involved...but rest assured about how important it is in the lives of these kids and their families

Becoming a foster carer was all about timing for retiree Philippa.

After considering the role for years, Philippa and her partner Rod finally took the next step seven years ago.

The Adelaide couple have now provided emergency and respite care for 15 children and young people through Anglicare SA and currently respite care for two siblings.

Philippa says respite care was extremely rewarding “knowing you are helping a child and their family”.

“Respite also provides an ongoing reward through the continuing relationship as they move on in their lives, even though it is not always plain sailing,” the 68-year-old says.

“I would encourage people to give it a go - the support we receive from AnglicareSA workers is great, they are there to support you and help you work through all issues you might face.

“When it is challenging I remind myself to think about the safe and happy places you are providing the child or young person, as it is worth the effort and you are providing an important community service.”

Philippa and Rod have shared their story as part of a #FosterCareSA social media campaign to bring greater awareness to the need for more foster carers in South Australia.

Rod, 69, says respite care was an ideal opportunity for people beginning their foster care journey.

“There are so many ways you can be involved, do what is convenient, but rest assured about how important it is in the lives of these kids and their families,” the grandfather says.

“Do what you are comfortable with, a little bit of respite goes a long way in helping vulnerable children.”
