December 3 marks International Day of People with Disability, which aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of people with disabilities.

International Day of People with Disability is a great time to remind carers that DCP has a Disability and Development Program with specialist allied health staff to provide advice about how to get the right supports and services in place for children and young people in care with disability or developmental delay. This includes assistance with navigating the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) for eligible children and young people.

Talk to your case worker if you are concerned about developmental delays or unmet disability needs for the child you care for. The case worker can then follow up to seek specialist advice from Disability and Development Program staff.

If you are struggling to support your child’s development or behaviour and would like specialist advice to assist with this, talk to your case worker about a referral to the Disability and Development Program’s Therapeutic Carer Support Team.

You can read more about the disability-specific resources available to carers on the carer section of our website.

The website also contains a guide to the NDIS.
